According to the United Nations definition Climate Change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, such as through variations in the solar cycle. But since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, generating greenhouse gas emissions that act like a blanket wrapped around the Earth, trapping the sun’s heat and raising temperatures. There are two strategies to tackle climate change: mitigation and adaptation. Mitigation tackles the causes of climate change, whereas adaptation tackles the effects. Mitigation is human intervention to reduce the sources of emission of greenhouse gases, thereby, preventing increase in temperatures. Adaptation is the adjustment in response to climate change. Climate change in Jordan has serious impacts on the water resources. The country needs to adapt and prepare for the impacts of climate change. But can Jordanians adapt to climate change? Two teams from our Newton Khalidi Fund awardees who have experience in climate change related topics came together to debate this topic.
